Hi Guys,

I'm looking ino the possibility of starting a business where I'll need to haul around a 300-lb. machine, an air compressor, pressure washer, possibly a generator, etc. I'll probably also need a hitch. I've ruled out Astro-vans and the like (too small) so I'm now seriously considering E-Series Cargo Vans (approx. 1995-2000) which I know very little about. I'm aware of the three different models (150, 250, 350) and their corresponding load ratings. I'm assuming the only REAL differences between them are the suspensions and brakes, and engine choices.

From what I've seen, they all appear pretty rugged but are there any particular years to avoid, or any that are much more desirable than others due to engineering changes? Are the V6's a good choice as long as I'm not pulling heavy loads, or should I stick with V8's?

If I only need, say, a 150 are there any disadvantages (such as worse gas mileage, poorer handling, higher maintenance costs, etc) to buying one that's rated for a heavier load (like a 350)?

Finally, where's the best place to find a used cargo van that's still in decent shape? I'm in CA and most of the ones I see around the L.A area are fairly abused. There are a few on the Bay that sound good but most of them are long distance. Thanks for any help you can offer!

I just bought one, and I know of another: 94 e250 for 3450. Looked really good to me.

I have driven every model you mentioned. I would recommend the E250 if you plan on leaving the tools in the van. The 150 suspension will be a bit too soft in the long run.
I had a E150 with a 300 straight six which was good on gas and very dependable. Just don't expect to set any land speed records. The newer 6's are not quite the same since they are "v" configuaration.
