I have a 1999 Ford Windstar SEL 3.8L with 120K KM's.
When I put the van in reverse it hesitates for about 3 seconds before it engages. It does this when it is cold and when warm, although a little quicker to engage when it is cold. When going into drive or the other gears it kicks in right away. It doesn't make any bangs or clunks when it finally goes in reverse and shifts fine while driving. I checked the fluid with the dipstick, it wasn't low and it looks clean and doesn't smell burnt. Not sure if this is connected or maybe the cause but when shifting out of park you have to press on the brake harder than you normally would before you can shift out of park.

It's old enough, shoulds have the tranny oil and filter changed. Verify no codes and see what happens.

x 2. pull the dipstick first and make sure the fluid doesn't look or smells burnt.

should I have a complete fluid flush or is changing whats in the pan sufficient?

fluid is checked with engine running, vehicle level and in park and warm as well.

Fluid is pinky and does not smell burnt.

will bring in tomorrow and see if there are any codes

I think a pan drain and filter change would be sufficient.
