Transmission rebuild core

I have a 2000 windstar 3.8 with ax4s transmission which needs a rebuild. I'm reading as much as I can about my options and trying to determine what will and will not work. I'd like to do a rebuild with a transgo kit and upgraded clutches, steels and bands but am having some trouble finding good information about problem hard parts ( if any) which should be given additional attention. Can I use an ax4n from a 95 taurus as a core? I have one available cheap but I'm uncertain of year to year differences and matchup from ax4s to ax4n. My intention is to rebuild a core and then swap it in so as to minimize hoist time. (I'm using my brothers hoist and want to respect his time). I've rebuilt AOD's and dodge 747's but this will be my first transaxle so I want to take my time and not be under pressure to rebuild it while the van is on the lift. Pointers and details would be very welcome.

Anyway, if you can, I'd try and use an AX4N transmission. Not sure about the compatibility between 95 to 2000, but keep in mind that the PCM might not recognize a pre-ODBII transmission. If anything else, go newer, not older.

You can contact these guys: JASPER Engines & Transmissions:: remanufactured engine: diesel, marine, import they might have something you'll be able to use at a relatively good price. If you really want to do the rebuild yourself, check out Ebay for stiffer internals that can be upgraded. With any luck someone who knows something about transmissions will post!
