DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co. said Thursday that it is recalling 234,208 Econoline vans in North America to fix a defect in the antilock brake unit that can spark fires even when the vehicles are parked.
"We have determined that one of every 10,000 units may have the potential for an overheating situation," Ford spokesman Glenn Ray said.
The electronic unit that controls the antilock brakes in the vehicles could electrically short-out, sparking fires, according to Ford.
The automaker is notifying customers not to park the van inside an enclosed structure due to the fire risk, he added.
Vehicles affected by the recall are from the 2003 and 2004 model years.
Ford said the problem does not affect the braking ability of the vehicles and no accidents or injuries have been linked to the recall.
This week Ford said it was recalling about 40,000 minivans because their wheel hubs may develop cracks.
