I have a 1971 F250 with a 390 in it, it failed emissions due to high levels of HC. i have leaned out the carb, put a new airfilter on, new spark plugs and wires, advanced the timing, and have run fuel treatment, carb cleaners, and seafoam through it religiously. is there anything else i can do besides replacing the carburator and switching to electronic ignintion?

i dont know as how much an electronic distributor would do for ya. if the points distributor is in good shape they normally do just fine. ive never heard of a truck of that age being emissions tested. i had a 73 f100 and it would poor black smoke out of it like a diesel but it always passed inspection cause they couldnt hook it up to a computer like these new ones next thing you could do is maybe throw a cat on there but that will rob ya a little power.

That's what I was thinking. Wouldn't a 71 be exempt?

yeah i think it started somewhere in the 90's were they were required to meet emissions.

I figure before long all states will require emission testing. It's gonna suck, Bigtime!
