Question 1985 f150 whining in 1st and 2nd M/T

Recently rebuilt my transmission which is a T-170. It went back together easily and when I drove it for the first time I was satisfied at first. But when I decelerate in both 1st and 2nd gear with my foot off of the clutch the transmission whines extremely loud. I pulled the transmission again not wanting to damage anything but don't know what to be looking for without paying a transmission shop $450. Any ideas on the whining when the transmission is under load??

Since it has helical gears, probably something was misaligned. It doesn't take much for a misalignment. What you're probably hearing is the back lash of of the driving gear being driven.

Without prints that state clearances, you can't. There are a few things that you can do, that may alleviate the issue. If you can get your hands on Prussian Blue or some similar transfer paste, you apply a very thin coat to the bull or main gear and rotate the assembly from the out put shaft and find out who and what is contacting, you might be able to figure out which why you shifted the shaft.
You can purchase it any any place that carries machinist supplies.

Could also check gear oil for any metal or shavings .

i should have put this earlier but i know the gears are grinding because

the transmission shop owner told me that's what was taking place

I just didn't want to pay him 450 to fix it if it were something i could do.

Re: 1985 f150 whining in 1st and 2nd M/T

I can't find a decent drawing on the tranny, and I'm used to working on much bigger gears, but all gear assemblies where thrust is produced will have a thrust gear to keep from pushing the main shaft into the casing. Since the transmission works in both directions, it probably has one on either end. See if you get the same noise in reverse, I suspect that the rear thrust not be against its shoulder which will cause heavy stress on the gears when the thrust of the shaft is in that direction.
