confused 1989 f150 4x4 5.0 EFI low power

My 89 F150 is very weak . Starts and runs fine , it just has no power. I have been thinking that I have a EFI problem, but maybe i,m wrong. I have been told the 302 has timing gear problems. After having the trans. overhauled the mechanic said he thinks it is running lean. I was thinking about just installing a carb and intake. Now I,m not sure what I should do. Can anybody make a suggestion please????
