1991 F250 starts when cold not hot

I just bought this truck the other day, owner told me of issue so not a surprise, drove home about 1 hour drive then shut off, tried to start and here is what it does
It tries to turn over like it has a dead battery, it does not even crank, like a compression lock !! it tries but no go. once cooled down all is ok.

I'm only guessing here but started windings, vapor lock, ? what would be causing. ?

any input would be greatly appreciated and if i can answer more questions related to post I will

Thanks in advance

Probably the starter. Check the battery voltage when it doing that to see what kind of draw there is. Have you tried jump starting it? Vapor lock would let it crank at fnormal cranking speed.

Knowing the type of engine you have might help. Wouldn't happen to be a 460 would it ?

Two things come to mind. You need an oil change or they used the wrong oil. That starter is under the right side exhaust manifold. The starter gets VERY HOT. I think that vehicle calls for a 1000 amp battery. 800 CCA. The reason i said 460 is they have the same problem. They put a heat sink on the starter to keep the heat away. I have the same truck. An 800 amp. 650 CCA. battery doesn't cut it. I had the same problem. If your oil breaks down under heat you might as well put water in your engine. When it cools down the oil gets thick the starter cools off it starts. Right ? You need about 4 times the power to start a HOT electric motor than a cool one. Remember and electric
starter is a DEAD SHORT until it starts to turn.

I'd have a look at the timing first.

Timing has nothing to do with it. " once cooled down all is OK. " Bad oil, over heated starter,
or bad battery. If the starter is ok i'll bet my last beer on a sunday the battery is bad.
been there done that with my 460. It was the battery plus i had to change the oil.

I'll have a beer with you in 5 mins. This one is empty. My little mans is on my keep board.
( cat ). if spelling is bad blame him. Just keep looking. I'm sure you will get it sorted. I had the same problem with my 460 and it was a combination of oil and battery. Got it fixed. Your dad is smiling now. He no longer has to put up with " I need this fixed but i don't have any money and i don't want to put any parts into it " . I know he saw this and he is loving it. Old mechanics never die. They just go over to the next stall. Take care. 300 Winchester is an awesome gun. Must be a magnum ?

Chip? Do you honestly believe that too much initial timing could in no way cause cranking "while hot" issues?
