My driver side door closes and latches, but not all the way, it still rattles no matter how hard I slam it. The striker is tight and in the correct position.

I assume the door latch mechanism is worn out. Can the mechanism itself be fixed? Or if not, Is this a piece better purchased at the dealer? Or are used ones adequate?

Test the latch with the door open, if it proves to be good, adjust the post (striker)

It was the stiker. There is a piece of plastic on the striker bar, that plastic has broken off and I hadn't noticed it until I looked at the passenger side striker.

I got a new striker at Ford for $19.00, all is well.
