1996 F350 5.8L Fuel gauge

I've tried everything I can find about fuel gauges, but obviously I'm missing something somewhere.. Since as long as I've owned the truck the front fuel gauge hasn't worked so I just resorted to using the rear, now the rear tank is leaking I might as well fix the fuel gauge for the front. The gauge works when I switch to the back tank, but as soon as I switch to the front it goes right down to empty. I checked the resistance from the sender unit, got 20 ohms, sounds about right because my tank should be almost full. checked continuity from tank up to switch, so the wire is good. The gauge works for the back tank so I'm assuming that its good, what else could be wrong? After the truck sits for awhile(say overnight) in the morning the gauge will usually read 3/8 of a tank until I start it, it will go back to empty..

ANY help is appreciated!

20 Ohms is nowhere near right for a full tank. Where exactly did you get that reading? Read this caption & the links in it:
