ok, this is gonna be kinda long, but i felt the need to share. have 2000 f150 with the 5.4, developed a "random misfire". well with the weather being around 0 degrees i took it to my local ford dealership (ripoff) . they decided it was the spark plugs (which only had approx. 15000 miles on them). i thought ok could be? maybe? almost $500 later and on the way home it started again. are you serious? took it back again, they deemed a bad o2 sensor. changed that out, another $150. ran fine for about 1 day. then it started again, except WORSE :angry:this time. i decided this time to fix it myself (should have done it in the first place). i decided to change the COPs (coil over plug). changed them all out and noticed that 7 out of 8 had stress cracks in the tops of them. Well when i had them out, i looked at the injectors, they were in pretty bad shape. The o rings were still ok but the body itself was VERY rusted (ohio ) I changed them also with some refurbished injectors off ebay for under $150. Now it runs as good or better than the the day i bought it :hy:. Dont be intimidated by the thought of having to do this job. It wasnt bad at all, main thing is....get everything out of the way (hoses, lines, wiring, p.s reservoir, and air intake) before you start. Take your time and do it right. If you want something done right, do it yourself! You will be pleased with the results....
The issue would have been found if they would have used a Scanner to look at diagnostic mode 6 test 53 at the misfire monitors.
Your mass changes of parts just covered by luck the offending coil.
What was happening is when you are in OD above 45 mph the EGR opens and leans the mixture.
If one or more coils had shorted turns and low voltage that could not fire the Lean mixture so you had misfires.
This type of misfire does not set codes.
Reason is they are not hard faults and are cancelled when the misfire goes away until it comes back again so do not set code or CEL.
Now you know the rest of the story. :shh:
Good luck.
I'm having the same misfire issue in my 06 f150 5.4, 120K, and just ordered new coils. Looks like you had changed the plugs before you found the coil problem. Do you recommend I change the plugs at the same time I do the coils?
It can be done. Are you mechanically inclined? If so the removal tool is available. With practice they aren't all that bad. I prefer a hot engine one side at a time. Spray penetrant into the plug hole( enough to over the hex of the plug), then crack them loose about a 1/4 turn. Then tighten and loosen again a little more. I repeat his process as I loosen then plug. A creaking sound usually means it's still in one piece and will get slightly easier to turn as you go. If one breaks there are several ways they can break. In the end have the tool on hand and if it breaks make sure you remove the electrode before using the pusher tool in the kit. It makes it way easier. I've had plenty of people try at home and end up towing I for us to do. It's stressful to do at home and many people just cave in and let us do it.
Not sure if this is the place to ask. New to the forum.
I have a 05 f150 with 5.4L engine. Last week started to run rough, code for #7 misfire. Replaced the coil. Still ran bad started to knock(like a cold diesel).
Shut it off, next time I started it it sounded as something was loose and banging around the engine, that stopped after 5 seconds. It continued to knock.
Shut it off. Underneath driver side on the motor it dumped a large puddle of oil.
I'm really stumped and rather mad as I have only had truck for a few months.
Is the motor pooched?
I have a 2002 f150 5.4L triton been kicking a lean code bank one and two. Hooked up scan tool today and it said cylinder 8 misfired 163 times. All others had zero. Went into data mode 53 and 5,6 and 8 were all jumping negative. Thought VCT until I did some research and they didn't start using that until 04. I've changed every plug and coil no more then 300 miles ago. Any ideas?
Bad injector? Try swapping it out with one on the opposite bank, see if the code moves.
