2002 f-150 5.4l jerking/backfire

Hey guys chad here I'm new here and i have an annoying issue with my f150 it is lack of power it seems sluggish on the throttle takes it a sec to go and it jerks and backfires and the backfire only when she wants to but the jerking is a daily thing no cel and i don't think its a coil its a different jerk its like someone pushing you if you were walking down the street perhaps. Rpms go up and down in that process as well. I cleaned the throttle body change the crank shaft position sensor and the connector along with it i don't know what else to do ideas would be grateful thanks if i give it a good bit of gas it don't skip/jerk once i slow down and left go of the gas it starts not every time like i said this truck has a mind if its own

Autozone will pull codes for free. The light doesn't have to be on for codes to be present.

Also check all vac hoses , pipes or breather hoses for leaks .If drawing air will give symptoms you describe .

You won't get a quick read on the trouble unless some one puts a Scanner on and looks at mode 6, test 53 for cylinder missfire counts.
My bet is one or more coils.
This is common type of fault from a coil with "shorted" turns.
It does not set a code because it's not considered a hard fault.
Good luck.

Re: 2002 f-150 5.4l jerking/backfire

Looking only for codes won't do.
They have to use a Scanner that will go to 'non continious monitor', then step to test 53, then step from cylinder 1 through 8 and look at he missfire count result.
If they don't know what that is, then they don't know how to do anymore than look for codes.
You have an issue that requires deeper diagnostics than just codes in order to get to the cause of your issues.
Ford has provided near full ability to access operating data for this use or a dealer could not service there own vehiches in shop.
Good luck.

If you don't have the ability to do more than turn a bolt then yes you have to unless you want to enjoy the missfire.
The codes don't tell anyone what the problem is, only the system involved.
Even then one has to understand more then just read words.
Sorry it's not that easy for you.
Good that you came here to ask. At least you got an answer with some explanation.
Good luck.
