A loud metallic noise can be a lot of things. Worst case is a possible engine valve/rod problem. I wouldn't rule out the turbo however. The turbo bearings might be shot allowing the vanes to rub against the housing. I wouldn't drive it like that for too long in either case. A blown turbo can cause engine damage. I had a similar problem on my Freightliner Detroit Diesel. The turbo oil line blew out causing the turbo to overheat. I lost a good 35 quarts of oil as the pan only had a gallon or so in it when the shop tore everything apart. By the time the idiot light on the dash came on the engine completely overheated and the turbo was shot.
