2006 F-250 5.4L auto transmission issue

I recently purchased a 2006 f-250 with a 5.4L and automatic trans.

When first starting from a dead stop, or anytime in first gear, if I give enough throttle for the engine to rev to ~5k before shifting, the engine/transmission stutters. If I let off the throttle is little is then shifts to second and everything is fine. I didn't notice the issue for the first month I owned it, since I don't normally use a whole lot of throttle when I start moving.

It's hard to explain the stuttering I'm feeling. It feel like and old company truck I used to driver that had a governor at 70mph. When it hit 70 it would throttle itself down. This feels sort of the same. It gets to say 5,200 RPM, then without me adjusting the accelerator peddle, it drops quickly and roughly back to maybe 4,800 RPM. Then will rev back to the 5,200 and so forth, being very jerky the whole time.

If only does this in first gear. It only does if I push the accelerator enough that it doesn't shift until ~> 5,000 rpm. If you just give it a normal amount and it shifts at a more normal rpm, nothing at all is noticeable.

I'm getting ready to take it into a dealership to have it look at, but want to get some input first. I'm not much a car/truck person, but I don't think this is normal.

Thanks,

Tom

That's a normal situation. The rev limiter kicks in and keeps it from over revving.

I thought those limiters only work during idle, when in neutral or park.

It does it regardless of the gear position.

So it's doing this at ~3,000 RPMs, not 5,000. So giving it a lot of gas, it gets to ~3k rpms and sita at about that for a few seconds before revving higher and shifting. Seems very odd to me, taking it into the dealership this week to see whats up.

Re: 2006 F-250 5.4L auto transmission issue

Try shifting the lever manually through the gears. I wouldn't rev too high in first, but once you get into second gear, let'r rip. HP peaks at 5000rpm in the 3V 5.4L engines anyway so it's no surprise that the fuel cutoff will be around that point. You could try getting a programmer to remove the stock governor and see how that works.

I didn't know about the stop at 3000 and rev higher part. Let us know what you find out.
