Exclamation 5.4L Triton...Powerful enough for a Superduty???

Hey guys,

I'm new to this forum and am glad to of just joined it. It looks like there is some great information on this site.

Anyway...I currently own an '01 GMC 1500 Reg. Cab 8' Box w/ a 5.3L V8. I am looking at buying an '03 F350 XLT Reg Cab 8' Box w/ a 5.4L V8 Triton in it. I was wondering what you guys opinions are on the motor and if its strong enough for the heavy weight Superduty??? Is it a motor that I can drive around with (empty) and get somewhere in a hurry with some sweet acceleration and speed? I own a 5.3 and that motor is alright and it gets up and goes...a pretty fast motor imo. I just don't want to get this 5.4 and have it super doggy...and not be able to pull my snowmobile trailer or rip around town.

My buddies tell me the 5.4 is too small for the Superduty and its almost like it can't pull its own weight.

Thanks John

Re: 5.4L Triton...Powerful enough for a Superduty???

What's the axle ratio? 4.1 to 4.5 axles give snappy acceleration with smaller motors..... BUT.... you're going to get lower mileage on the highway; 1 to 1-1/2 mpg lower than if you had a 3.7 axle... and, the engine is a lot busier on the highway. Around town, your driving style has more influence on mileage than anything else.

If you're towing reasonably heavy loads on a regular basis, get the 4.10 at least. If the towing is a very infrequent thing, the 3.7 will do, unless you want to impress your friends by smoking the tires.

Ummmmm.... Rule #1 - NEVER buy a first-production-year vehicle. Give 'em a year to get the wrinkles out.... maybe 2 years (look at the first 2 years of the 6.0 compared to the rest of the production run). Although there haven't been any extraordinary failure problems yet, the initial reports on the fuel economy of the 6.4 are truly scary..... 11-12 mpg seems pretty common, and diesel is $4.00 or more per gallon.

Also... the original poster was looking at a used '03. The diesel for that year was the 7.3... a very good engine, but the automatic trans from that era didn't stand up very well behind the diesel (although the 5.4 didn't put out enough torque to hurt the trans).

Go get an x3 calibrator from SCT. Go to:
Home and have mike sell you one. You won't be disappointed.

Go for a 7.3... Much more reliable than the 6.0 and the 6.4's are straight trash right now.
