7.3 idi starts then dies

So i have an 88 ford f450 with a 7.3 idi and when i start it up itll run for a few seconds then die but then i can keep trying to crank it and eventually itll start and run but it takes a while and sometimes my battery will start to die also once its started and running for a few minutes and warmed up i can shut it off and start it up with no problem.

7.3L IDIs are not computer controlled. There is no OBD port, no ECU. They are the last generation of completely mechanical diesels.

Only exception is if you have the E4OD transmission, then there is an OBD port, usually under the dash, to pull codes for only the transmission.

Not to be confused with the 1994+ 7.3L Powerstrokes, which do have an ECU and OBD ports.
