Question 89 F250 With Bent Valves

Hey,

I have an 1989 F250 with a 351 Windsor engine, When I bought the truck I was told it had a bad head gasket. I took both heads off and found 2 bent exhaust valves on one side and 1 on the other. I talked to some guys around here as well as the machine shop where I take stuff to and they all said the same thing, that someone had over reved the engine. I spent the money and had the heads worked. Re-Installed them and started the engine. Everything went well for the first three times starting and running it. On the fourth time, the truck started running horrible and smoking really bad out of the exhaust. I took the heads back off and sure enough the same three valves were bent again........Someone with some knowlede here please help.....

Re: 89 F250 With Bent Valves

1. Wrong pistons - too "tall" or no dish as most 351W engines have this feature.
1a. Piston installed backwards with valve reliefs on the wrong side
2. Camshaft w/too much lift (> .500)
3. Wrong rocker arms (Ratio exceeds 1.7:1) Or bent at the fulcrum
4. Push rods too long
5. Heads machined too far.
6. Water in the cylinder (cracked head or block)
7. Stretched connecting rods (over revving)

Did the head repairman dye check or magnaflux the heads for cracks.

It sounds like this engine is a candidate for a removal and total check out dimensionally and mechanically if indeed it was over revved.

Good luck
