'90 F250 diesel Lost Reverse, O/D... 137k

I'm going to be looking at a 1990 F250 4x4 Diesel XLT xcab LB. It just had $2500 worth of work done. New big tires, Inj pump, rear brakes, valve cover gaskets, etc.

Then the tranny's reverse went out. It's in San Francisco, I'm in New York. I plan to drive it back east, after the tranny is fixed. I'll be the mechanic.

Thoughts? Price for a rebuilt? What re-mans to stay away from? Thx, Andrew

Well, I haven't shopped around for trannies in awhile, but you will find a good price by comparing parts houses like napa or carquest, ect. Probably 2-3K for a rebuilt (with a core). As far as brands go, I have seen problems even with Ford Factory rebuilds. Which ever company you go with make sure they have good customer service and a great waranty.
