I am considering buying a 95 F250 with the 300 6 cylinder and a 5 speed. As a younger fellow, I know these engines had a great reputation for good torque and terrific durability. Many of the old cattle farmers in my parts preferred them over V8's in their 3/4 ton trucks. I just grew to like them. But, I was always around older carb models (mid 80's and older). How will the fuel injected 300 in this 95 model compare? Is it just as torquey and reliable or not? Are there any differences anywhere inside the motor or external I should know about that might change my mind? What kind of mileage could I expect (assuming 3.55 or 3.73 gears)? Please offer up any "heads-up" comments or whatever to inform me.
what do you want to do with your truck. The reason i ask is because i have heard that the 300 has alot more low end torque than a 302 which i guess makes it good for towing. But saying that, the 302 i've got pulls ass as well.
Also being a Ford engine, its reliable so theres nothing to worry about there. (As long as its looked after)
i have a 95 f150 with the 300 and 4 speed w/ overdrive. i dont know how the f250 tranny is but mine has high 1st gear. once you take off it will outperform the 302 and a lot of 351 but you have to baby the clutch pedal. loads require a feathering of the clutch pedal you will learn very quickly but they handle it no problem. Iv had my truck for 6 years and it still has about 25 percent of the factory clutch left and i have pulled one heck of a load with it almost every other day. you will love the engine just dont bring your rpm over about 2500 rpm unless you need it cuz your valves will not like it but the engine does have a redline of about 4000 to 4100 rpm.
