Right now, the best thing you can do is to make sure fluid level is adequate, and as you mentioned the CEL is on, get the codes read. Transmissions can have their own codes. Once you get the codes we can better help diagnose your problem.
I know for a fact that a lot of times on Dodge vehicles (seldom on Fords/GMs) that a bad TPS sensor (throttle position sensor) can make the transmission seem to jump around. A lot of transmission shops wrongly diagnose this symptom and people spend $3K on a transmission with the SAME problem! Just a thought.
