95 F250 XLT 7.3L turbo Diesel 4x4 trans.

I have a 1995 F250 4x4 extended cab 7.3L turbo diesel truck with a bit of a trans problem.

I don't drive it much anymore mainly because the cost of fuel these days, so i drive my ranger. Anyways i went to drive my F250 so i can pull my trailer and noticed that the OD light on the trany shifter was blinking. The trans also seemed to shift harder than normal. I have had some issues with the trans mission since i baught the truck, but that was explaned to me as torque converter chater or slipage. other than that it ran and shifted fine before i parked it for a few weeks(3 or 4). What can be the problem worst case and simplest checks i can do as a shadetree michanic.

Thanks
BigPete

Re: 95 F250 XLT 7.3L turbo Diesel 4x4 trans.

Right now, the best thing you can do is to make sure fluid level is adequate, and as you mentioned the CEL is on, get the codes read. Transmissions can have their own codes. Once you get the codes we can better help diagnose your problem.

I know for a fact that a lot of times on Dodge vehicles (seldom on Fords/GMs) that a bad TPS sensor (throttle position sensor) can make the transmission seem to jump around. A lot of transmission shops wrongly diagnose this symptom and people spend $3K on a transmission with the SAME problem! Just a thought.

I've heard a faulty torque converter clutch solenoid will cause this issue.

You don't have to "get the codes read" - you can pull them yourself anytime with a paperclip (jumper wire). Read the 7th post in this thread.

confused Re: 95 F250 XLT 7.3L turbo Diesel 4x4 trans.

well it looks like i have internal issues in the transmission and Ford recomends replacing it. i found a tranny for it from Monster transmissions E4OD Transmission, Remanufactured, 4X4, 4WD, w/Converter & Shipping - REBUILT TRANSMISSION FORD E4OD - Monster Transmission & Performance | 800-708-0087 | Fast FREE Shipping!
have any of you used these guys? How was their service?

Second question: How hard is it to replace this transmission? I'm a shad tree mechanic and have worked on Jeeps most of my driving experience plus other small mid sized vehicles, but never something this new or as big. Are there any tricks i need to know about this transmission that'll make it easier to swap out? I will be buying a Haynes manual, but they a lot of the times leave out stuff. Any help would be appreciated.
