2002 F250 V8 automatic - cleaned battery cables then took to have smog check done. Tech tells me the computer is not reading that I need to drive it long to reset it. Drive over 200 miles in the next 3 days still computer does read, but truck runs great. Now they say I need to have the computer flashed, but ford dealer says disconnecting the battery does the same thing, still not reading. What's the problem and how to I fix it can't get smog done to reg. truck?????

I don't know how well you know the garage you're taking it to, but having the PCM reflashed doesn't make a lot of sense, unless you're having other issues. You might need to drive it longer under different conditions, some resets take longer and the PCM is looking for certain driving conditions to reset itself.You said you drove 200 miles, was this highway or a lot of stop and go? Also, are you up against an inspection? If not, I'd just drive it a while longer, get some highway time on it, then have it checked again.

This all started about 10 months ago, the driving of several thousand miles on freeway, stop and go, and mountains has not reset the computer. Yes I'm up against a inspection soon so need to figure this out... any other ideas?

If it won't connect check your fuses. On my 2000 f250 power point and obd connector shared the same fuse.

No fuse labeled OBD, it appears they changed fuses about every year but they are all 20amps so I'll check all the 20amp fuses....

Under the dash fuse 12 is the Cigar/OBDII connector fuse.
Check the Cigar lighter, if it's dead the fuse is blown. A 20 amp
Fuse 36 a 10 amp if blown will keep rebooting the PCM everytime you start the motor. It's the 'keep alive' power to the PCM.
All the Pids go into diagnostics everytime this memory is cleared for any reason even for one code.
The evap system takes the longest to clear.
Until all tests are complete a code 1000 will be present. it's not a trouble code unless one system does not pass and clear in a reasonable amount of time then specific codes appear unique to that system..
The shop does not know every veichle that passes through so will be a source of incorrect infomation. They often have just test people without any deep knowledge.
Get these fuses checked and good and you will be fine after enough drive cycles for all tests to complete and the 1000 code will clear.
Get an 02 f250 owners guide and look at page 163.
A little knowledge from the right source sometimes saves a lot of grief.
