F150 Gas tank falls off?

New to the forums here, never thought of joining until this morning. I did some brief searches on this and a few other forums but never found this one.

My gas tank fell off of my '98 F150 this morning. I was driving down the highway ~60MPH with a full tank and down it went. The front two straps apparently had rusted through and broke, causing the tank to wedge itself between the road and my rear axle. Ironically, the gas line, pump, and fuel guage stayed attached and intact, allowing the engine to keep running and me to safely pull over.

Nothing was hit before it fell, and I haven't gone off-road in years...I keep very good care of the truck, which is in otherwise excellent condition. When are you supposed to check these things for wear?

I am happy that I am not on the front page of tomorrow's paper, but am quite upset about the design and potential deadly hazard it posed to myself and other drivers.

Has anyone heard of or seen this issue? I don't have my VIN at the moment to check for any recalls, but I would think that random tanks of gas falling off should be one. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
