Hey :) Long time listener, first time caller.
Here's the issue that hopefully someone will recognize.
1983 F250. 351w with 2 barrel. 2x4 automatic supercab. Dual fuel tanks.
Truck died on me one day with a bit of "surging". Plenty of fuel in both tanks and switching back and forth between tanks didn't help. Removed the gas line from the carb and the was no gas being pumped. Parked the truck for the night and prepared to tackle it the next morning. The next morning it was pumping again. Sure enough, later in the day it surged and then died again. Picked up and installed a new manual fuel pump. Still no gas. Checked the fuel filter...clean with no obstuctions. Bypassed the switch and ran one tank and then the other directly to the pump. Still no gas. I could, however, see fumes coming out of the hose as the motor turned over. Anything I might have overlooked?

The fuel pump is the one on the engine? Did it run at first when you replaced it? There could be an open in the line from the tank and the pump is sucking air.

Yes...it's the mechanical one mounted to the engine. It did not run after the new pump was installed. An opening in the fuel line makes sense. I will check that in the morning and post if that was it. Thank you :)

When you crank the engine, does it have a vacuum on the pump side and pressure on the carb side?

That is also something I did not try. I just hooked up the hoses assuming the pump would just....pump. I will check that as well. Think there's a chance I didn't install the fuel pump right? Thanks for the tip. :)

It has happened before. If the cam is in a certain position, the pump lever can go below it and it won't pump. If you remove the pump, try hookoin a hose to it on the tsnk side and pump the lever. It should pump fuel if everything on the tank side is okay. Doing the pressure vacuum test would verify if it's in right.
