First Truck Purchase - Need Advice

So I'm thinking about buying a '77 F-100. The price is right and I like the looks of the older models vs. new.

The backstory is the hatchback I use to transport mountain bikes has finally bitten the dust and my newer car is too small to put a bike inside and I'd rather not put a rack on it. The purpose of the F-100 will primarily be hauling bikes and minor utility, though I live close to my work and can easily fit it into a rotation w/o killing my gas budget.

Truck appears solid enough on the outside (it was resprayed a while back) but I'm no expert on mechanicals and will have a pro look it over once I'm certain it's worthy. What I'm looking to find out from you guys are any problem areas/issues this model or series is prone to. I don't mind putting money into the thing within reason and over time but I also don't wanna' buy some dude's problem.

Finally, every VIN ID site I could find can't help me with a vehicle this old. I've included the VIN below along with the rest of the supporting tag data - can anyone break some basic info outta this #?

133 H F101 HU4 C 46J

F10HNY46018

1977 22

4700 Max GVWR

Thanks a half-ton.

Re: First Truck Purchase - Need Advice

I had a 71 F-100 Ranger XLT and the only 2 problems I had was the Kingpins And the fusebox, other than that OLDER trucks are made with REAL metal and are easier to work on if anything goes wrong. If you want to find out more info on the truck you might call Classic Auto Parts in OKC, OK at 405-631-4400. Ask for Charles

Re: First Truck Purchase - Need Advice

Thanks Brian, that's just the kinda' info I'm looking for.

I did read somewhere trucks from this era were built like battle ships.

The present owner was unavailable when I stopped to look at it but I did take several pictures of the truck. Minimal rust underneath since it's a southern vehicle but a fair amount of oil around the pan and what not. The thing is dirty and neglected at current and it hasn't been moved in some time due to spider webs on the wheels. I have my doubts but we'll see what happens when I get a chance to run through it with the owner.

Re: First Truck Purchase - Need Advice

oil around the pan is gona be normal for this year of truck, if ti starts and runs and the PRICE is right I would buy it in a new york minute. These trucks are EASY to work on and parts can be found at any salvage yard or like I said you can order new parts from Classic Auto Parts in OKC, OK. They ship parts out to every part of the world. So drive it and check ALL the fluids, tires and look for black smoke out the tail pipe. All in All I would buy it ANYWAY.
