How Many Gears Doe My Powerstroke Have?

I could swear that my 2001 Powerstroke (Automatic) has 5 gears. I can count them as I shift. However, my brother says I'm an idiot...that the truck has only a 4 speed transmission.

The tranny I'm running has been factory rebuilt. It's a 565389.

Thanks for any help!

Re: How Many Gears Doe My Powerstroke Have?

My gues is that you are both right. Someone correct me if i'm wrong but it is a 4 speed tranny with overdrive...Meaning that when you are driving, you can count 5 gears because you have 5. 1,2,3,4, and OD. I have a 2000 Manual and its technically a 6 speed because it has low, 1,2,3,4 and 5 or OD. Hope this helps

Don't forget once you get up to cruising speed the torque coverter drops RPMS a touch as well, it can often be confused with an extra gear. Speeds account for forward speeds only in a transmission. Such as low, 1,2,3,4,5 which is technically a six speed transmission. I've also seen some labelled low, 2,3,4,5,6. To know which transmission you have exactly, you'll have to get underneath and read the label, it'll tell you what it is, or at least give you a number for reference and the dealer can decode it for you.

Re: How Many Gears Doe My Powerstroke Have?

The TRANS code on the door sticker is easy to see & decode, but the only heavy auto transmission offered in '01 was the E4OD/4R100.

Current (2008) Ford transmission naming convention is as follows:
* The first character, a number, is the number of forward gears.
* The second character, either the letter 'F' or 'R' represents front (transaxle) or rear (transmission) wheel drive.
* The next characters, a grouping of numbers, represents 1/10 the design torque capacity of the transmission/transaxle.
* The last character, if used, is one of the following:
* * 'E' for electronic shift
* * 'N' for non—synchronous shift
* * 'S' for synchronous shift
* * 'W' for wide ratio
