Exclamation Need help with '89 f250 gas mileage

i have an '89 f250 with factory plow unit (behind bumper setup) with a 351. I am only getting between 6-8 mpg. I changed all plugs and wires, dist. cap, air/fuel filters. running glasspack from cat back with a 3" pipe. I had paid for a complete fuel system cleaning and that helped some. I have a fried with a similar truck ('88 f250) same motor and everything. He is getting 12 mpg city/highway. is there anything i can do to make this gas mileage better?

With that tow package it is very possible that you have a higher gear set in the differentials, meaning that you get more torque and acceleration, but less top speed and gas mileage. Further, simply having that plow setup on the front could weigh you down or whatnot.

If anything is wrong... maybe check to make sure that the front hubs are disengaged. If they are manual, this is easy. But the automatic hubs could easily be stuck in engage. you have to jack up the front of the truck and see if the u-joints or front drive shaft are moving.

Change your O2 sensor, its a regular tune-up item and if its bad could be causing your engine to run rich all the time.

oh, you may have thought of this already but you could have a plugged up cat converter, worth checking.
