I hope you have a fat wallet..... black smoke means you're pissing away partially burned fuel - and it only happens when you're really on the throttle; a time when you're getting poor mileage even with the proper fuel/air mix.
How much of that do you want to do at 3 bucks a gallon?
A low-restriction air intake, like a K&N, coupled with a large-diameter exhaust will give you a little more power, and actually INCREASE your fuel mileage, a sensible move.
