confused oil pressure making me nervous

OK I have a 94 F150 4x4 with a 4.9 litre in it, My one and only problem is that every now and then my oil pressure drops down into the red zone when sitting at a red light or stop sign, but goes back to normal when I start moving again. The truck has just over 177,000 miles and runs like new. The main's ,I'm sure have some where on them would a heavier oil help? Os is my truck on it's way out?

Re: oil pressure making me nervous

You can try a little heavier oil & see if that helps. Probably main bearing wear.

Going to move this to the Ford F-150 | Ford F-250 | Ford Super Duty | Ford Diesel section

Re: oil pressure making me nervous

well I went from 5w30 to 10w30 , I'm starting to think it's the sending unit, cause now the guage is bouncing , even in neutral, no noises from the motor, I'm going to switch to a mechanical guage so I can see just what my oil pressure actually is.

Re: oil pressure making me nervous

Well 5/30 & 10/30 are the same weight when hot. You might want to try at 10/40 if the mechanical gauge does the same thing.

Re: oil pressure making me nervous

well I finally got the new guage in, same thing as before, when cold pressure at about 30lbs, once it warms up to normal temp drops to about 20 lbs, and when stopped in traffic drops to about 5 to 10 lbs.

How bad can that really be, the motor does not knock or tick infact it runs like new. Should I turn up the idle a little, maybe advance the time just a bit, or just not worry about it.

How much difference would a heavier oil make?

Re: oil pressure making me nervous

5 to 10 psi is pretty bad. I don't think a heavier will be of much help. Your probably looking as a bearing job.

Re: oil pressure making me nervous

yeah thats probably gonna cost an arm and a leg, on this particular motor I can just jack up the motor to get to oil pan off right, I dont feel like pulling the whole motor to check the mains.

Re: oil pressure making me nervous

well I finally got my truck running in tip top shape, you were right, it was the main bearing's. I got a friend who is a mechanic, he came over and helped me so it was done right.
The Main bearing's were worn down to the copper in spots, while we were under the truck I decided to pu new rod bearing's, they were worn pretty bad too, figured what the hell while we were still down, to put in a new oil pump. Benn running for a week now, and oil pressure is holding great.
Thanks for the advice in helping me save mans true love, His truck lol

no really thanks
