Power Locks

My truck is equipped with power locks, however they seem to be sticking. Yesterday I went in and removed the panels on the doors and used an air compressor to blow out all of the dirt that has gotten behind the weather seals. Then I applied a liberale amoutn of WD-40 to all moving parts in the door, but no solution on the sticky locks. This has led me to believe that it is a problem with the actuators that move the locks. I have no idea how to go about fixing them (replacing them?) and from looking at the door without the panels on it, i couldnt figure out how to get at them...anyone have a similar experience or advice on how to get to the accuators or where to get replacements?

Re: Power Locks

What year and make. Sound like the actuators to me as well. They are a pain to replace. Not cheap either.

Re: Power Locks

HI I'm new here. Gotta '99 super duty F-250. I got back from out of town the other day and my power door locks don't work. Well kinda.
Have standard power door locks, not keyless. No activation from driver side up or down. If buttons pushed down to lock, activates from Pass. side to unlock. Got 12v to both switches. replaced driver side switch, still the same. Should I replace pass side switch too? Or look at accuators? Funny they would both die at the same time. Checked door wiring and see no breaks or even any wear. Continuity of both switchs check out. What do i do to diagnose problem, or should I just replace all switches and accuators?

Any help appreciated

Re: Power Locks

Do the doors lock and unlock from the passenger side and nothing from the drivers side? The power go through the right switch to operate the locks. It probably needs the right switch. Here's a diagram showing the way the system works. It shows 2 extra actuators in case it's a crew cab. If you want more information, post back.

Re: Power Locks

Thanks for your reply. Doors unlock from passenger side when locks are pushed down manually. No lock from either side. Your schematic is similar to one I have. I have replaced the driver side switch. will replace the passenger side friday when I'm off work. Its a pretty simple always hot circuit, with flip from hot to ground as I understand it. Hope switch relacement works on pass. side. I don't want to dig those actuators out of the doors. Don't know what else it could be, there are no relays in the circuit.

BTW will probably be here more as truck is 10 y.o. and I don't see buying a new one anytime.

Thanx again

Re: Power Locks

As long as the actuators work one way, they have to be good because all the switches do is reverse the polarity.

Re: Power Locks

Both switches have now been replaced and the symptoms remain the same.
I guess the next step is to remove the door panels and start checking wires for continuity. I have visually inspected the wire harness where it goes from doors to body and see no sign of broken or cracked wiring.

Maybe a bad ground?

Any way to test the acctuators in place?

Pass. door had some body work done last year. Maybe wiring in door was damaged or wiring to acctuator has come disconnected on one side.

Oh well, not today...snow and rain.

Thanks in advance if you have any ideas.

Re: Power Locks

The Black/white wire should have 12v. Unhook the passenger side switch and connect a jumper to the pink/orange from the 12v and ground the pink/black. The door locks should lock or unlock the doors. Switch the wires and they sjhould go in the other direction. I always forget which does what. That will tell you that the actuators are working. If they don't work, unhook the plug from the actuator, (you have to take the door panel off) and power one side and ground the other to operate it.

Re: Power Locks

Thanks, I'll give that a try when the weather clears up. The truck won't fit in my garage.
