I've got a 1990 F250 with a 351C and it has a horrible power steering unit. It whines very loudly and hardly works if at all. I suspected a leaky hose but haven't noticed the resevoir level lower, the fluid inside appears to be frothy. Bad pump? I've heard so many bad things about ford power steering and would really like to remove it completely. Would running without power steering damage the steering assembly over time?

Is the fluid full when the engine is off? You may have air in the system. You can't remove the power steering and drive it safely.

It is full when the engine is off. I had a buddy turning the steering wheel and i noticed large bubbles coming up in the reservoir (engine running). If i do have to change out the pump is there a company that makes a better, compatible one than stock?

The stock one is best. Many rebuilds are noisey too unless they're rebuilt by Ford.
