question on smoke stacks

i have a 400 ci gas engine with a 650 cfm carb on it. i spent alot of money on the engine that i built so i want the maximum performance out of it. all my friends say i should put smoke stacks on it(the truck it is goin in is a 79 f350). i think that if i dont have black smoke comming out of my stacks its kinda pointless. but just out of curiosity, what would smoke stacks do to performance as opposed to a regular high performance exhaust system with glass packs?
