I have just taken old alternator off truck, without any problems, but how the heck do you put a new one on, specifically how do you get the belt over the pulley?
More info.... Serpentine belt I assume, have you released the tension on the idler pulley, (or tensioner pulley)? Is the belt routed correctly? Belt diagram is usually on a sticker under the hood.Is it the proper belt? Alternator pulley the same size as the one removed?
yep its serpantine, and is routed fine. It is the old belt, i just got a new alternator. So how do I release the tension. I know which one is the tensioner pulley. its a bit hard to get at, but do I just take off the 2 bolts that hold it in? Do they come off the regular way, ie antclockwise?
That tensioner should have a 1/2" square hole in it to put a big 1/2" drive ratchet into to release the belt tension. The tensioner is on the passenger side of the engine.
It may require a big ratchet or braker to release it since these tensioners are quite strong.
