Hi everyone,

Bought a 2000 SD Diesel 7.3L and everytime I am idle the steering wheel can only be turned about a quarter turn and then gets tight. When my foot comes off the brake and I have a slight amount of movement the steering is just fine. I thought it might be a pump problem. I took it to a "store" (which for now will remain nameless) and they told me that the SD trucks are just like that. I don't buy it! Any thoughts would be helpful. I am new to the Diesel world-hense my email address. LOL Thanks for any help.

Open the hood and spray down the steering knuckles with lube. After a while they'll rust and cause binding problems. If you get tired of spraying them every few months you can replace them as well. I believe the 2000 had recirculating ball steering, which has a different feel than rack & pinion, but shouldn't bind as you mentioned.
