i have a 2001 f150 supercrew when idling around town it will puff blue smoke every time i hit the gas.but on long trips it doesnt use a drop of oil.it also puffs blue every time i start it.any help would be greatly appreciated

I'd bet a set of piston rings are on their way out. Start up takes the most pressure and once the engine warms the rings will expand. I'd keep a close watch on the oil level as well as coolant level. Does the truck run rough at all? If you step on it to pass someone on the highway do you notice blue smoke then too at higher rpms under load and at speed?

it only smokes when idling around town.it doesnt consume a lot of oil either about a 1/2 a quart every oil change.as for the engine it runs well .just woould like to get old smokey under control more of an embarasment than anything else

How long have you noticed the blue smoke for? I imagine at least a month as you mentioned you took some long trips. Now that I think about your problem more, it may be a plenum problem and/or a bad EGR valve. If you haven't replaced the PCV valve in a while it'd be good practice to do so.

I just replaced the pcv valve.you think i might have some blockage on my egr or its stuck in the open position?its only been smoking for about a month and its not getting any worse.would the intake have to come off on this engine to clean the egr passages?

I belive it's the valve guilds being worn and the oil is running down them into the cyclinder. You can put some umbrula seals on and see if that takes care of it. That the cheapest fix. Just my 2 cents.

if the guides are worn would the new seals just be a bandaid how costly would new or reconditioned heads be?

New heads will cost for sure. Prices vary depending on the performance of the head (ported, etc). Stockers will run a good $750/piece so $1500-2000 would be my guess. There are tons of sites online that sell heads, and if you're the Ebay type, it'd be a good place to check as well.
