Tire Chains - chain type vs aircraft cable type? - Ford Forums

I plan to drive from Vancouver BC to Palm Desert on I-5 in Dec '07 and may need chains from Grant's Pass to Mt Shasta area in N. California. Should I buy the chain type or are the aircraft cable type much better to use?

Instead of chains, I would suggest new rear tires! BFG All-Terrain are a long-wearing, good traction tire that will save you in most road conditions.

If you are just going to carry them for the regulations, get the cables. They are lighter and easier to store. They banned them on most big trucks as insufficient. If I were actually going to use a traction aide like this, I would use the chains.

The cables are kind of a joke really. The only reason they got popular was trucks had to have chains available to them certain times of the year on certain mountain passes. The cables were much cheaper, lighter and easily stored. Hardly anyone ever actually used them.

Like Johnny said, A good tire wood be as much a benefit as the cables would be. Chains however will work good. Just be sure they are on tight and well secured because they will destroy a fender very quickly.
