I'd put my money on the shift kit. Shift kits can increase line pressure in some areas and decrease pressure in others so the transmission can perform better. This would likely be the cause of the delay between shifting from drive to reverse. Only thing I can think of that you could try, is to get a programmer(chip/tuner). They're not cheap depending on the performance level but with most of them you can adjust shift points and often hasten and firm up shifts, not just forward gears. ...Just something to think about.
