The Lincoln LS is a four-door luxury sports sedan that received a significant boost in performance and luxury when it was redesigned for 2003.
Increased power, improved ride and handling and a redesigned interior further established the Lincoln LS as a unique driver’s car that sacrifices nothing in terms of luxury and comfort.
The 2004 Lincoln LS builds on this momentum by improving the powertrain and suspension even further, and by adding new exterior and interior colors to appeal to a new generation of luxury customers.
The LS is available in Base, Convenience, Premium, Sport, LSE (late availability) and Ultimate configurations with a V-6 or V-8 engine. It is built in Wixom, Mich.
Design and Equipment
The exterior of the updated LS includes a new interpretation of the signature Lincoln grille with a full-perimeter chrome surround, a simpler bumper fascia design and new lamps. High-intensity-discharge headlamps are available. All LS models have dual chrome exhaust tips. New exterior colors for the 2004 LS include Cashmere TriCoat and Light French Silk clearcoat metallic.
Inside the 2004 LS are satin nickel accents and a choice of real American walnut burl, aluminum or black lacquer trim. New interior color schemes include Dark Stone/Medium Light Stone and Shale/Dove.
Storage space inside the LS is impressive due to larger center and overhead consoles and larger in door map pockets. The center console is three times as large as the previous design, made possible in part by the addition of a new electric parking brake.
To improve upon the car’s signature driving dynamics for 2004, the attachment points for the front stabilizer bar have been stiffened, while low-frequency steering column vibration and road noise have been reduced.
The 2004 Lincoln LS is powered by a choice of two engines.
An all-aluminum 32-valve, DOHC 3.9-liter V-8 produces 280 horsepower and 286 foot-pounds of torque, and an all-aluminum DOHC 24-valve 3.0-liter V-6 produces 232 horsepower and 220 foot-pounds of torque.
Both engines are improved in terms of power and refinement from the original LS. Chief among these improvements are the additions of variable intake camshaft timing and advanced “drive-by-wire” electronic throttle control.
Both engines deliver power through a five-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. The V-8 cars are fitted with the SelectShift™ feature, which allows drivers to manually command gear changes.
For 2004, the transmission has been improved with an added bleed hole in the servo piston to reduce reverse engagement variation. This means that when a driver puts his or her foot on the brake and moves the shift lever into gear, the operation is smoother and more seamless.
The sophisticated chassis of the LS provides the first measure of safety – controllability. In emergency situations, electronic systems such as AdvanceTrac™ and anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution and Brake Assist help maintain control.
Comprehensive safety equipment includes an optional side-curtain air bag system in addition to the standard dual front and side-impact air bags. Second generation advanced driver and front passenger air bags are equipped with occupant position, weight and seat-belt usage sensors as part of the Personal Safety System™. Rear seating positions have three upper and two lower child safety seat tether anchors.
