I guess I already know the answer to this, but are there any companies that may produce/reproduce performance items for the MEL series, or is it simply such a unique engine that few people realise how good they are.... cheers
I too am looking for 430 info. So far the best source I have come up with is the Lincoln service manual for 1960 which is the year of my car. However the engine in my car(430) is seized solid so I have come up with another that seems to be in great shape. I don't know what year this engine is so I'm looking for someway to tell by the engine number. Maybe someone out there can help. Pete McGill
Was searching for info on what I believe that I have, a 462 in a 66 Lincoln, and came across this forum. The car itself is rough and is going to be used for a demolition derby car but not the engine and trans. What kind of demand is there for this engine and tranny set up? I plan on selling the engine and trans. I fired it up yesterday and it seems to run OK and the trans seems tight. Biggest problem I seen was a cracked exhaust manifold with a few broken bolts. Everything is complete on the engine except the machanical fuel pump has been by-passed and an electric pump has been put in.

There is a " MEL engine forum " search those words and it will be at the top of the list. Also the Brooklands books " 1949-60 Lincoln " and " 1961-68 Lincoln " (performance porfolio and gold portfolio ) available from Classic Motorbooks have a lot of info on the MEL engines.
Information on this series of engines can be found by entering"Ford MEL engine ", on Google. Wikipedia has quite a bit of info also.
This engine was introduced by Ford in 1958 , same year as the FE series. But it is an entirely different engine and few if any parts are interchangable. It s not related to any other engine , including the 401, 477 and 534 truck engines, but has the combustion chamber in the block like these truck engines. It was a very heavy engine 750+pounds . It was introduced in displacements of 383 and 430 cu in for the Mercury , the 410 was for the Edsel The 430 was used in the Lincoln and was later increased to 462 cu . In 1968 , it was replaced by the 385 Series, which is an entirely different and more modern engine, displacements for it were 429 and 460 and a truck version with 370 cu in.
well i was looking around for
430 wiring diagram hahaha (good luck)
and stumbled upon this thread
i had to sign up for this forum
to post this
this engine sucked the soul out of me
for the last year
all i can share with you is
these MEL engines
are not for those faint of heart
if your not a weathered mechanic or VERY optimistic ethusiast
walk away
prepare for the headacke of your life
i do not recommend for those of you
with....
girlfriend
wife
family
job
life
or other project(s) big nono
few thing you should take in cosideration
before rolling up your sleaves for this engine
going to your local Remanufactura
unless for alt, starter, lubes and lights
is out the question
unless you own, run or have readily access
to a machine shop
or wealthy enough to visit with frequency
there will be blood raising rage
Block: just like any other project engine
but i can not stress this on these MEL engines
very important thoroughly inspect the block
before anything
espesialy in the cylinder walls
since they are high compression plenty of wear and tear
also
this is considered as a y-block
where as the piston tops are not
flushed or parallel with the deck
this means take it to a special place to bore out the walls
also means more money :(
Gaskets: Felpro
(do not bother with Vintage Gasket
although thats great place for hard to find cardboards
and plainly states they carry them for the MEL's they dont)
*note you will not find the power steering seal that seals ps pump to the block your are better off to be picked up at your local seal mfg.
ive got the actual size that fits (its in metric!!!)
ill provide dimensions later
Water Pump: no mfg. stocks this pump anymore
if its a solid piece just remanufacture it yourself
if you run in to one and you dont even own an mel engine
keep it they are good as gold in the edsel/conti community
Wiring: if you have the engine out
and they are all about in good condition
replace them now!!!
*cause most likely the cotton/nylon isulation has corroded
and some places the plastic has dried and cracked away
leaving to exposure to faults and shorts
insulating technology was not up to par then
plasict or rubber componenets: good lord
dependinding what model and/or year
there is not a whole lot, but for those few
treat them as they were only ones in the world
cause they are, just get them mfg if they break or torn
to make life easier get two or three donnors
no joke
most likely any conti or edsel 59 t0 66
with a 430 or 462 is good parts car
but here in california
thats hard enough to find not destroyed by China's metal crunch
well are just a few things i can come up with
that i wished i knew before
starting this engine build
but yes with enough
blood, sweat and gears
it can be done
well ive see i might sound pessmistic about it and over the top
but this build up is allmost done
hopefuly ill be able to get
on this site and other forums that have helped along the build
I'm new to the Forum. I'm having the hardest time finding a ps pump for a '68 Continental with a 462 in it. Does anyone know where I could find one, at a good price, or what other years or sizes would work.
