I am considering buying an older 1977 Lincoln Mark V with 97k miles. The owner told me that you must use the parking brake because the car can slip out of the Park gear. He also further stated that this is supposed to be some kind of pin that needs to be replace. Does this make any sense?? Is this a sign of transmisson problems to come??

That's a minor problem, tranny should be OK, as long as it feels alright when your driving it.

You should never rely on the transmission parkin pawl alone especially in a vehicle the size and weight of a Lincoln. These cars used a C6 auto box behind a 460 motor, These boxes are cheap to repair, I'd be more concerned about corrosion and failed electrics.
I rebuilt a MkIV 2 door Lincoln for a friend, great car, once we got all the gee gaws working.
