Re: 1979 MkII RS2000

Then there is always the diff gears - go 4.11's out of a panel van or 3.77's out of a 1.6, and run a sierra 5sp. A lot more get up and go!

What he said. The 2 Litre pinto Engine can be made to go quite well, especially in the light Escort Body Shell. Stick with a singel 2 barrell Webber unless you want to start making some serious HP.

I had a 2 Litre Escort Ghia as my first car. The Factory style Quick Shifter is a VERY worthwhile addition. It makes the gear changes very nice. Very short throws with a nice weight.

hmmm forget carbs and forget N/A if you want to b1tch slap your mates 300ZX then go EFI and Turbo on your Pinto.

Re: 1979 MkII RS2000

Quick shifts are pretty easy make, the theory is to raise the point of rotation. You just need access to a lathe and some alloy to raise the "plastic nut" at the bottom of the shifter. Hardest bit is stopping the little s#%t of a thing unwinding. They don't really achieve anything though - other than a different feel. RS2000s had them fitted, and many people wrongly assumed that they had a close ratio box because of that.

Pinto's (Escort 2ltr isn't strictly a Pinto as the US Pinto had a 2.3 ltr version) are ok, but they are relatively heavy and noisy - you can actually get a nicer handling car with the Kent 1600 (then there's the Lotus and BDA option). Forget the four barrel, it's going to be way over carbed without other mods.

You can use (cheap) VW beetle pistons to get some more CI, but remember to put them in backwards (arrow to rear) as VW engines point the wrong way.

These days, with EFI so readily available, I'd inject it, You'll proabably find the EA single point injection carb fits the Weber DGAV bolt pattern. And EA CPI bits are dirt cheap.

There was a guy selling a Pinto injection manifold on ebay not that long ago, keep an eye out for one of those!

Re: 1979 MkII RS2000

I saw that, but it was for an American 2.3. Which is totally different. Different again to the NZ 2.3 cortina motor. You can make an EFI setup it's not a difficult as you'd think. I think it's easier than getting carbs to run smoothly. You can read how I make mine www.retrotech.orcon.net.nz

(probly not the most user friendly as a daily driver though)

Oh and the roar, what can I say.
Ever lifted a Pinto? They are not a great engine and weigh a ton. I reckon the alloy V8 would almost be lighter. It would be bitch to fit into an Escort engine bay though, getting the exhaust around the rails would be fun.

Best you could do would be to inject it with the twin cam (Sierra?) head. If you are happy to move away from Ford, then put a decent jap engine in it, but that would sacrilege......

As for the roar - got to agree - bring it on!!! Only a BDA sounds better.....
