We got a 1984 Mercury Lynx that has been sitting in a garage since 1985.

The water pump went bad and when started the timing jumped. My question is on the camshaft gear there is a arrow inside one of the holes, should that arrow be pointing up or down when setting the gears for new timing belt.

It's on a 1.6 motor.

I cant find no timing marks or anything on the head that shows where this arrow should be pointing. (up or down toward they crank pulley)

Looking at the pictures its pointing up but they still say to point at timing mark and the motor dont have one.. :)

Hope this helps. If yours don't have the pointer, notice the key location on the cam @ 6 o'clock position.

Maybe someone else can confirm this, but unless I am mistaken the 1.6 was an interference engine meaning you probably have other issues besides just a bad timing belt and water pump. I know the 1.9 or 2.0 was non interference, but I'm pretty sure the 1.6 wasn't.
