You can put too much oil in and cause damage but it has to be quite a bit to cause that . Likes of 1/2 pt or so wont make any difference .Normally if far too much you would get plumes of smoke from exhaust .Would have to be way up dipstick . May just be bulbs on panel lights unless that car has a panel light dimmer switch , no connection . With the smell also , looks omnious for engine .
