I was rearended on Dec 10th 2010. Bumper needs replacement. At the time the license plate lights got broken.
A few days after I was driving down the road at night and there were sparks like the fireworks of July 1st shooting out the back of the car and thr smell of rubber burning.
I slowed down, then stopped as thought that the car was on fire.
After that night there were not further problems with sparks flying
A week ago the car woudnt start. It stuttered and was like it was out of gas..I smelled gas and some rubber burning then..I went to the garsge and poured 15.00 into the ( unreliable gas guage) car.. I then was parked in a tow zone. I out the emergency flashers on. while I went to wait for help.. The battery went dead.. Then got a boost. that didnt work.
The car still stutters but wont turn over and has the smell of burnt rubber in there.
I am very curious if there is anyone out there who would know what the problem is.( I had the mechanic change the ignition coil and that wasnt the problem. it still wont turnover). Could this all be caused by the rear license lights being shorted causing the wires to burn? whats burning? Why wont it start .. There was noo warning of the breakdown.. Any suggestions that are viable welcomed.

It depends on how bad it was hit. If just the bumper and license plate area, that would be a separate proble. Did the mechanic change the coil without checking anything? Does the engine crank over and not start/

Hello and good day:

First let start by getting some more detail info...

1. Where exactly where the Sparks coming from in the back..by the license plate holder?...Under the car?..Where?

2. Was the Gas/Rubber smell coming from under the HOOD? Or from the Back, where the Damage occurred?

3. How old is the Battery?

4. Have you checked under the car where the damage area for any Gas Leakage?

You have a multiude of problems here and we need to start from the back of the car where this damage occurred to the Front under the Hood.

Could it have been the inside of the exhaust silencer ( muffler ) box damaged with bump and internals / fibre glass packing burning and blowing out ? If exhaust collapsed inside , and restricting flow ,wont help running either . Also may have damaged cat .

Can be quite spectacular when you see the the material inside the boxes on fire and blasting out the rear , especially if your right behind the vehicle with the problem !
