2001 Escort has me stumped...

Okay so a good friend of mine has a 2001 ford escort zx2 with the 2.0 motor. Coming up to stop signs the idle would really start jumping up and down and then eventually die. The light was on so i read the code and said system too lean bank 1. So i replaced the upstream oxygen sensor, and this kinda half fixed it. It takes about 15 to 30 seconds now for the idle to start jumping after being stopped, but will not die now. It kinda makes a loud hissing sound when u slowly accelerate but goes away after keeping a constant speed, i have sprayed starting fluid on all the lines i could see and nothin changed. I took out the iac motor but actually looked very clean so i didnt really clean it. If you guys could please give me hints that would be great. Thanks

Just because it looks clean does not mean it is. Take off the IAC (idle air control) or the IAB (Idle air bypass), and clean it. Now if this doesn't help...Replace it. Also Check your Vacuum lines...make sure they are all connected correctly ...no cracks, or breaks....One more thing, did you check you TPS (throttle position sensor).

Honda: never use a Brake cleaner on any Emission or Air intake...always use a /Carb/Throttle cleaner.

To check the TPS...take a #8mm wrench to it and take it off...Make sure u disconnect the connector first...then you have 2 options...1. you can take a Volt/Ohm meter to it..make sure you get a reading of some sort...2. just look at it, and you should be able to turn the mechanism wheel...if it does not turn one way or other it is bad.

Check those Vac/Lines first.

I have a 2000 escort zx2 that does the same thing and has a couple other problems, we are possibly goingto be replacing the fuel pump soon, does anyone know where the fuel pump is located on this car?

Hello and good day to you:

Your Fuel Pump is located in the Fuel Tank itself.....Dink go to AutoZone, or Advance Auto...and Buy a Haynes Ford Escort & Mercury Tracer Manual...

In Section 4--subsection 6....it clearly out lines the procedure for the Removal...

Good luck...
