2002 Escort SE rough idle and chugs

I've been losing gas mileage for a few months now. I scrapped a MAF sensor a while back, however my car still returns faulty codes for both it and the O2 sensor. I misjudged my fuel level and actually ran out of gas yesterday. After refilling, the car now has a rough idle as well as chugs to get up to speed (it also frequently stalls at idle). I'm planning on replacing both the MAF and O2 sensor, but would the problem more likely lie in the fuel filter/fuel pump since I only encountered these problems after running dry? Thanks in advance!

I would check plugs . plug ignition coils / leads ( whatever is fitted on that year ) first and also timing as you have been losing gas mileage prior to running dry . Replace fuel filter wouldn't go wrong especially if original .If still having problems , check compressions .

Check engine light on? I would be looking for vacuum leak first.
