91 escort blow-by

i have a 91 escort with high miles. runs great, doesnt smoke out the back, has escort-like power(enough, but not much), yet it took me over several mountain passes. however, it has a serious blowby or crankcase venting problem. large amounts of smoke/exhaust is being pumped out the top end thru the hose that recirculates it into the air cleaner box. oil develops in the box soaking the filter. the pcv is fine. is this blowby or something like a stuck exhaust valve or even a plugged catylitic converter? or just an exhausted engine?

i have rigged up an oil containment system (o.c.s), really an bottle catching oil as it sprays out the top hose...i once had a taurus that did the same thing out the oil dipstick. is it a ford thing? never seen this in any other cars...

one other thing too...this car wont run worth a damn unless i unplug the plug on top of the air box...is this a sensor that has failed? runs great unplugged, but with a check engine light on...will it pass an emissions test? will having the hose mentioned earlier disconnected cause too much oxygen in the mix to pass?

thanks for any input!!!

Re: 91 escort blow-by

I'm guessing it is probably a tired engine and the rings are worn.
Get the engine compression tested and this may let you know if it rings or not.

Fords aren't the only ones to do this if the rings are worn as most do the same.

Re: 91 escort blow-by

Sorry mate I'm not sure what that is.
I wonderd about mass air flow sensor but thought it would be a no go with it unplugged.
