91 escort heater core stink fest

what a beautiful day in seattle.....just right to take on a nightmare...

my heater puts out a horrible smell, worse than antifreeze usually is...no water on the floor, but the window steams and slimes up...the smell and slime occurs whether the heat is on or not....

i assume i just need a new heater core...and the book makes it look like quite a job...the dealer wants over four hundred to do the work, so i am gonna dig in myself...

any tips to make the job less complicated? it appears i have to remove the whole dashboard just to get to the core..is this the only way? what happened to the way my old truck used to be? the core was in a box on the firewall under the hood.....that was too easy....:-)

Re: 91 escort heater core stink fest

Have you had your cooling system pressure tested? That tends to show up leaks good and proper. You can also get coolant additives that prevent minor leaks for a while.
If you are going to tackle it yourself, get hold of a workshop manual as a reference point.
