'95 Escort LX - Ignition / Starting Trouble

Hello all,

My wife has a '95 Escort LX that will not start without intervention. Everything appears fine from an electrical point of view: the power windows and locks work, the radio works, the lights work. It runs fine, it just won't start when I turn the key. The only thing that happens is that there is a click from a relay mounted on the firewall on the passenger side of the car.

The only way I can get the car to start is to run a wire (with a switch) from the battery to the passenger compartment and then to the starter. Then I put the key in the "run" position and flip the switch to give juice to the starter. After the car starts, I flip the switch off to disengage the starter.

So far I've replaced the starter and the battery terminal cable going to the starter. There don't appear to be any blown fuses. I've checked the computer and discovered no faults being reported. I've had the ignition control module checked to no avail. Tonight's project is to replace the ignition switch/key on the column and see if that helps. I'm getting a bit tired of playing hide-n-seek with this problem. Does anyone have any ideas/pointers for things to check?

It sounds like it is the ingnition switch that is the problem. Have you tested to make sure you are getting any power through it? And I dont have the specs on the total voltage you are supposed to see unfortunately.

The ignitions switch on my 94 escort gt has gone twice since new , that is probably what you need as was mentioned.

Re: '95 Escort LX - Ignition / Starting Trouble

I have a 93 escort and I recently experienced the same exact symptoms.

My mechanic did a quick diagnostic and discovered there was no
current flowing through the ignition swtich when I attempted to
turn the car over. He simply replaced my ignition swtich and my
car was running fine again.

This is the first time my ignition switch has ever died on me (after
10 years of ownership) so I ended up carrying two keys for my car
now: one for the door and one for the (newly replaced) ignition.

Hope this helps.
