hello all, new to this site. hope someone can help. I got a 95 escort with 1.9 engine. car was running great, all of a sudden stalled one time and would not start again. you can hear the fuel pump power up when you turn the key. I sprayed starting fluid into fuel rail and not even a sputter, nothing. key turns like normal, dash lights come on, starter cranks, but no start. tried to read code with a voltmeter like haynes manual said, voltmeter showed nothing, no sweep of needle at all. I replaced the ignition module, still no start. my next step is to buy a code reader that will read this car, because I am not sure of my abilities reading it with a voltmeter, (I may have done something wrong, in order to get no reading) not sure. I can't get it started to get code read for free from autozone. any help would be greatly appreiciated, thanks.
I did not see it addressed in the post, but did you check the timing belt?
wow, did not even think about it. after reading your reply, I went out and was able to pry the timing belt cover enough to slide in a screwdriver and as soon as it touched the belt, the belt slid back about an eighth of an inch towards the motor. aren't those things supposed to be really tight? I am going to eat supper, then remove the cover for a closer inspection. what would be the easiest way to check timing if it just jumped a tooth out of time? this thing has the coil packs instead of a distributor. I will repost after a thorough check with cover off. thanks alot.
no prob, yeah the timing belt is supposed to be pretty tight...when you get the cover off if the belt is not broken only slipped a tooth I would reccomend checking your tensioner and depending on your mileage I would see about a new belt since even if the tensioner is good adn the belt just slipped it could be a precursor to belt failure...if you get a haynes or chiltons manual they are pretty good at describing the setting and install of a new timing belt

well, I got the a/c hoses out of the way and the acc. belt out of the way, I got the cover out of the way a little more, I had my son turn the key a couple times, and the belt stays still, cam sprocket on top does not turn. so I'm guessing the belt stripped it's rubber teeth on the bottom (crankshaft pulley). then came to the part in the haynes manual, where it says the motor mount must be removed in order to get the timing belt cover completly off. so I will jack the engine up so I can get the mount off in the a.m. and go from there.
glad that it seems you tracked down the issue....wish you the best in changing the belt...it's not real bad....but some ppl even good mechs have a time with it
got er done today. it wasn't too awful bad, had to use a chain wrench to hold the bottom pulley while I loosened the nut. not enough room to put a wheel puller on it. it had an original belt with the ford oval on it, it made it 93,000 miles. It stripped the teeth only on the bottom, a nice smooth spot on the belt about six inches long where it went around the pulley. I broke the hole you put a ratchet in on the alt. belt tensioner (and my knuckles) when I put it on. went to the boneyard to try and find another, but only found a 94 model that had a tensioner slightly bigger on it. so I ended up using the one I broke by going underneath with a 1x2 and wedging it loose to get the alt belt back on. in good shape now, running good. thanks again for tipping me off to the timing belt. got to do rear brake lines on a 91 t-bird tomorrow, not looking forward to those crusty bleeders, I plan to soak them good with pb blaster, and hope they don't snap off.
