My 95 Escort overheats after driving about 10 miles. I turn on the heat and all is well. I changed the thermostat. The problem started months ago when my electric fan stopped running. I was unsuccessful at determing which sensor turns on the fan so I wired the fan to the battery and added a rheostat, so I manually control it myself. I ran super flush for a week, no change and the water pump isn't leaking. Anyone any thoughts?

If the electric cooling fan stopped working for a time it's possible the car has overheated and blown the head gasket.
